The Suzuki Aerio SX is a quirky compact hatchback that provides maximum cargo utility for its size. For 2004, a larger 155-bhp 2.3L engine provides some badly needed power. In a crowded subcompact segment, the Aerio SX is positioned to offer a roomy alternative at an attractive price.
Engine
* 2.3L motor has decent low-end torque for rapid acceleration from a standstill.
* Engine is boomy, with noticeable vibration across entire rev range.
* Engine is noisy at high RPM.
* 5-speed manual transmission recommended to extract maximum performance from engine
Transmission
* 5-speed manual has progressive clutch actuation and smooth engagement.
* Shift lever has low effort during gear changes.
* 4-speed automatic (tested in 2003 Aerio SX AWD) saps available engine power.
Interior
* Attractive dark gray seat fabric
* Shiny, hard plastic on console looks cheap
* Digital speedometer is bright and legible.
* Bar graph tachometer is too small to be easily usable when shifting gears.
* Plentiful interior headroom.
* Hatchback, folding rear seats, and parcel shelf adds utility.
* Audio system controls are placed high in center console for easy access.
Exterior
* Tall, boxy styling maximizes interior room.
* Integrated foglights in front fascia add a sporty look.
* Truncated rear end makes the Aerio look stumpy.
* 15 in. polished alloy wheels are attractive.
* Rear spoiler doubles as a partial sunshade.
Ride & Handling
* Tall body results in tippy handling.
* Aerio leans heavily in turns.
* Tires are not very grippy.
* Suspension is tuned for a comfortable ride.
* Torque steer noticeable with FWD drivetrain and 5-speed manual during acceleration.
Pros
* Roomy interior
* Good value
* Decent acceleration with 5-speed manual
* Available AWD for added traction
Cons
* Tippy handling
* Ungainly styling
* Digital dashboard not as legible as analog equivalent
The Aerio SX boasts a roomy interior and hatchback utility. Add a very competitive price and the Aerio looks like a viable alternative to a Civic or Corolla. However, the unorthodox styling may put off style-conscious buyers. Enthusiasts will appreciate the torquey motor, but the roly-poly handling certainly won't win their hearts.
