- The big news in the 3-series this year is the addition of a M3 sedan to the model lineup. The M3 sedan debuts as a 4-door model that is otherwise mechanically identical to the successful coupe. All 3-series models receive "freshened" styling. These styling changes include reshaped grille openings, new side-markers, and body-colored trunk grips. All 3-series models receive all-season traction control.

- Last year's successful Z3 is updated for 1997 with an available 2.8 model. The Z3 2.8 features a 190-hp 2.8-liter 6-cylinder engine, beefed-up manual transmission, widened rear-track, and strengthened rear suspension. Stylistically the 2.8 Z3 has a unique integrated front spoiler and bumper and flared rear fenders. All Z3 models receive traction control.
