- 1997 Volkswagen Cabrio
- The convertible of the VW lineup is split into two models for 1997: the Standard and Highline. Features like ABS, leather interior surfaces, foglamps, alloy wheels, and a cloth top (as opposed to vinyl) differentiate the Highline from the entry level Cabrio. The 4-cylinder engine is updated with new heads for improved fuel delivery.
- 1997 Volkswagen Golf
- Volkswagen's legendary Golfs receive only minor updates for 1997. The 2.0 liter four cylinder engine in the standard Golf receives an updated cylinder head design that improves fuel delivery. On the inside, cloth seating, a larger glove box, and cargo lighting are all standard for the Golf. The GTI versions of the Golf receive an updated suspension with stiffer components all-around. The updated suspension lowers the ride height of the vehicle by 10mm.

- 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
- Volkswagen's sedan, the Jetta, receives a new model for 1997. The new Jetta joins the GL, GT and GLX models. The GT is a 4-cylinder Jetta with the aggressive exterior treatment of the GLX model. All 4-cylinder Jettas receive the same engine updates as the Golf. The GLX model receives new 7-spoke alloy wheels.
