Mazda has resurrected the rotary with the RX-8, which actually accommodates adults in the back seats, via the reverse-opening rear doors. The normally aspirated 1.3L rotary (Wankel) engine makes 238-bhp when equipped with the 6-speed manual. Output drops to 197-bhp with the 4-speed automatic. A high-revving rotary (9000 RPM redline) really deserves the close-ratio 6-speed to extract the most performance from the engine. Mazda makes no apologies that the RX-8 is aimed at hard-core enthusiasts, who appreciate a lightweight chassis and nimble handling. The optional Sport package adds 18-inch wheels, bigger front brakes and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) for enhanced handling.
