- Overview
Mazda has added an extra dose of performance to the already sporty Mazda3. The new Mazda3 MPS is a 5-door hatchback equipped with a 2.3L I-4 turbo that cranks out 250-bhp, and propels the MPS from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in a claimed 6.1 seconds. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). All the power is sent to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual. Mazda has taken steps to combat inevitable torque steer, so a limited-slip differential, engine torque management linked to steering angle, and balanced halfshaft stiffness are designed to keep the Mazda3 MPS pointed in the intended direction. A stiffer body and sport suspension are standard. If Mazda can keep the torque steer under control, the MPS will be a viable alternative to other FWD compact sport sedans.
