The mid-sized 5-Series has been criticized for striking out in a new styling direction compared to its conservative predecessor, but sales of the new model have not been affected. A technological tour-de-force, the 5-Series features a host of electronics and electronic driving aids. Three powertrains are offered: a 215-bhp 2.5L inline-6, a 255-bhp 3.0L inline-6, and a 4.8L V8 with 350-bhp. 525xi and 530xi models offer the xDrive all-wheel-drive system found in the X3 and X5. All models are available with a choice of 6-speed manual or automatic. The 530i and 550i sedan customers can also select the 6-speed SMG transmission. The interior is relatively uncluttered given that a large number of functions are located within the iDrive system that dominates the center console. Unlike many of its competitors, the 5-Series emphasizes the "sport" in sport sedan.
2007 5-Series models will include four years of BMW AssistTM. Thermal night vision option is now available. A tire pressure monitor is standard. HD Radio is optional. The Sport package now has 20-way adjustable seats and a new 3-spoke steering wheel.
