- Overview
In Ford's last attempt to address the Chevy Suburban, they created the monstrous Excursion which proved too large and expensive for many. This time around, Ford is following GM's successful strategy creating two different wheelbase lengths. The Expedition EL is a full-size SUV with ample room and cargo hauling capability. The EL model adds over 14 inches to the cargo area of the standard Expedition. An independent rear suspension improves ride and handling, and is a rarity in this segment. The standard 5.4L V-8 is coupled to a 6-speed automatic which is unavailable in all but its most expensive GM competitors. ABS and AdvanceTrac(R) vehicle stability control with Roll Stability Control (RSC) are standard. A Safety Canopy(R) side airbag system is available. Other options include a trailer towing package, Power-Fold(TM) 3rd-row seats, DVD entertainment system, and navigation system.
All-new extended wheelbase version of the Expedition is 12 inches longer in wheelbase and almost 15 inches longer in overall length. Most of the room goes to greatly enhance the rear cargo volume. The Expedition EL model differs from the base model from the B-pillar rearwards. A 5.4L V8 provides the power and a six-speed automatic transmission is standard.
