The mid-sized 5-Series has been criticized for striking out in a new styling direction compared to its conservative predecessor, but sales of the new model have not been affected. A technological tour-de-force, the 5-Series features a host of electronics and electronic driving aids. Three engines are offered. 528xi and 535xi models offer the xDrive all-wheel-drive system found in the X3 and X5. All models are available with a choice of 6-speed manual or automatic. The interior is relatively uncluttered given that a large number of functions are located within the iDrive system that dominates the center console. Unlike many of its competitors, the 5-Series emphasizes the "sport" in sport sedan.

What Changed:

The 2008 5 Series features mild exterior and interior updates. The six-cylinder models switch to the latest generation of normally aspirated and turbocharged engines. This results in new 528 and 535 models.
