Although the Liberty replaced the hugely popular Cherokee, it has never met with the same enthusiasm as its chunky predecessor. Some may argue that the Liberty isn't as macho-looking as the old Cherokee, but it is still a credible SUV with strong off-road credentials. The standard 210-bhp 3.7L V-6 can be mated to a 4-speed or 5-speed automatic. Some models are available with a 6-speed manual. Buyers looking for better fuel economy, and willing to give up some refinement, should consider the 160-bhp/295 lb-ft. 2.8L I-4 turbodiesel. A choice of axle ratios and part-time and full-time 4WD systems allow buyers to customize the Liberty to their needs.
